बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् | मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः
bṛhatsāma tathā sāmnāṃ gāyatrī chandasāmaham . māsānāṃ mārgaśīrṣo.ahamṛtūnāṃ kusumākaraḥ
സാമമന്ത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഞാൻ ബൃഹത്സാമമാണ്; ഛന്ദസ്സുകളിൽ ഞാൻ ഗായത്രിയാണ്. മാസങ്ങളിൽ ഞാൻ മാർഗ്ഗശീർഷമാണ്; ഋതുക്കളിൽ ഞാൻ കുസുമാകരനാണ് (വസന്തം).
I am also the Brhat-sama of the Sama (-mantras); of the metres, Gayatri. Of the months I am Marga-sirsa, and of the seasons, spring.
സാമവേദത്തിലെ സ്തുതികളിൽ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതാണ് ബൃഹത്സാമം. 'ബൃഹത്' എന്നാൽ വലുത് എന്നർത്ഥം. മാർഗ്ഗശീർഷം എന്നത് ഡിസംബർ പകുതി മുതൽ ജനുവരി പകുതി വരെയുള്ള മാസമാണ്. ഇതിന് മിതമായ കാലാവസ്ഥയുണ്ട്. പഴയകാലത്ത് വർഷത്തിലെ മാസങ്ങൾ എണ്ണിത്തുടങ്ങാൻ ഈ മാസമാണ് സാധാരണയായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഈ മാസത്തിന് ആദ്യസ്ഥാനം നൽകിയിരുന്നു. കുസുമാകരൻ എന്നാൽ മനോഹരമായ പൂക്കാലം, അതായത് വസന്തം.
