आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरिणा | कामरूपेण कौन्तेय दुष्पूरेणानलेन च
āvṛtaṃ jñānametena jñānino nityavairiṇā . kāmarūpeṇa kaunteya duṣpūreṇānalena ca
اے کُنتی کے بیٹے، گیان (علم) اس داناؤں کے مستقل دشمن سے ڈھکا ہوا ہے جو کام (خواہش) کی صورت میں ہے، اور جو ایک کبھی نہ بجھنے والی آگ ہے۔
O son of Kunti, Knowledge is covered by this constant enemy of the wise in the form of desire, which is an insatiable fire.
منو کہتے ہیں کہ خواہش کبھی بھی اشیاء کے لطف سے سیر نہیں ہوتی یا ٹھنڈی نہیں پڑتی۔ بلکہ جیسے آگ گھی اور لکڑی سے بھڑکنے پر مزید تیز ہوتی ہے، اسی طرح یہ بھی لطف اندوزی کی اشیاء سے جتنی زیادہ غذا پاتی ہے، اتنی ہی بڑھتی ہے۔ اگر زمین کی تمام غذائی اشیاء، تمام قیمتی دھاتیں، تمام جانور اور تمام خوبصورت عورتیں ایک ہی خواہش مند شخص کے قبضے میں آ جائیں، تب بھی وہ اسے اطمینان نہیں دے پائیں گی۔ جاہل شخص خواہش کو اپنا دوست سمجھتا ہے جب وہ اشیاء کی تمنا کرتا ہے۔ وہ حواس کی تسکین کے لیے خواہش کا خیرمقدم کرتا ہے، لیکن دانا شخص نتائج بھگتنے سے پہلے ہی تجربے سے جانتا ہے کہ خواہش اس کے لیے صرف پریشانیاں اور مصیبتیں لائے گی۔ لہٰذا، یہ داناؤں کا مستقل دشمن ہے، لیکن جاہلوں کا نہیں۔
Manu says? Desire can never be satiated or cooled down by the enjoyment ofobjects. But as fire blazes forth the more when fed with Ghee (melted butter) and wood? so it grows the more it feeds on the objects of enjoyment. If all the foodstuffs of the earth? all the precious metals? all the animals and all the beautiful women were to pass into the possession of one man endowed with desire? they would still fail to give him satisfaction.The ignorant man considers desire as his friend when he craves for objects. He welcomes desire for the gratification of the senses but the wise man knows from experience even before suffering the conseence that desire will bring only troubles and misery for him. So it is a constant enemy of the wise but not of the ignorant.
