sañjaya uvācha evam uktvārjunaḥ saṅkhye rathopastha upāviśhat visṛjya sa-śharaṁ chāpaṁ śhoka-saṁvigna-mānasaḥ
Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus on the battlefield, Arjuna cast aside his bow and arrows, and sat down on the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief.
This is the climactic verse of Chapter 1. Arjuna — the greatest warrior of his time — collapses. He doesn't just put down his weapons; he "casts them aside" (visṛjya), an act of complete renunciation. The word "śhoka-saṁvigna-mānasaḥ" (mind overwhelmed with grief) describes a total psychological breakdown. This sets up the entire teaching of the Gita.
