मूढग्राहेणात्मनो यत्पीडया क्रियते तपः | परस्योत्सादनार्थं वा तत्तामसमुदाहृतम्
mūḍhagrāheṇātmano yatpīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ . parasyotsādanārthaṃ vā tattāmasamudāhṛtam
L'austérité qui est entreprise avec une intention insensée, en s'infligeant de la douleur, ou dans le but de détruire autrui, est dite être de nature *tāmasa* (ignorante).
That austerity which is undertaken with a foolish intent, by causing pain to oneself, or for the destruction of others-that is said to be born of tamas.
Certains brûlent du soufre dans un pot et le placent sur leur tête. Certains enfoncent des crochets de fer dans leur chair. Certains se suspendent la tête en bas au-dessus du feu et avalent de la fumée. Certains se tiennent dans l'eau froide, immergés jusqu'au cou. Certains torturent le corps en allumant des feux aux quatre points cardinaux (avec le soleil comme cinquième feu – c'est ce qu'on appelle le *Pañcāgni Tapas*). Certains s'assoient au centre d'un cercle de feu. De telles austérités sont *tāmasiques*. Celles-ci n'aideront pas à atteindre la connaissance du Soi.
Some burn sulphur in a pot and place it on their head. Some thrust hooks of iron into their flesh. Some hang themselves with their head downwards over fire and swallow smoke. Some stand in cold water immersed up to the neck. Some torture the body by lighting fires on the four sides (with the sun as the fifth fire -- this is known as the Panchagni Tapas). Some sit in the centre of a circle of fire. Such austerities are Tamasic. These will not help one to attain knowledge of the Self.
