यया स्वप्नं भयं शोकं विषादं मदमेव च | न विमुञ्चति दुर्मेधा धृतिः सा पार्थ तामसी
yayā svapnaṃ bhayaṃ śokaṃ viṣādaṃ madameva ca . na vimuñcati durmedhā dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī
பார்த்தா! தீய புத்தி கொண்டவன் எதனால் (எந்த உறுதியால்) தூக்கம், பயம், துயரம், சோர்வு, அகங்காரம் ஆகியவற்றை விடாமல் இருக்கிறானோ, அந்த உறுதி தாமஸமானது (தமோ குணம் கொண்டது) என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.
That firmness is considered [Some editions read partha in place of mata (considered).-Tr.] to be born of tamas due to which a person with a corrupt intellect does not give up sleep, fear, sorrow, despondency as also sensuality.
இருளின் உருவமான மனிதன் எல்லாவிதமான தீமைகளாலும் ஆனவன். அவன் மிகவும் சோம்பேறியும் பாவியும் ஆவான். அவன் தூக்கத்திற்கு அளவுக்கு அதிகமாக அடிமையானவன். இவன் இவற்றை சரியானவை என்று கருதுகிறான். தனது தீய செயல்களால் துயரத்தை அனுபவிக்கிறான். உடலுடன் மிகவும் பற்றுதல் கொண்டிருப்பதால், பெரும் பயத்தை வளர்த்துக்கொள்கிறான். அவன் எப்போதும் மனதளவில் திருப்தியற்றவனாக இருக்கிறான். அவன் காமமும் அகங்காரமும் கொண்டவன். எப்படி நடந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று அவனுக்குத் தெரியாது. அவன் முரட்டுத்தனமானவனாகவும் திமிர்பிடித்தவனாகவும் இருக்கிறான். அவன் புலனின்பங்களில் அதிகம் ஈடுபடுகிறான்.
The man who is an embodiment of darkness is made up of every possible kind of evil. He is very indolent and sinful. He is inordinately addicted to sleep. He considers these to be only proper. He experiences sorrow on account of his evil actions. As he is very much attached to the body he entertains great fear. He is ever discontented at heart. He is lustful and selfconceited. He does not know how to behave. He is rude and insolent. He indulges much in sensual pleasures.
