यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः | इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता
yadā saṃharate cāyaṃ kūrmo.aṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ . indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyastasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā
Et quand celui-ci retire entièrement les sens des objets des sens, comme une tortue retire entièrement ses membres, alors sa sagesse demeure établie.
And when this one fully withdraws the senses from the objects of the senses, as a tortoise wholly (withdraws) the limbs, then his wisdom remains established.
Le retrait des sens est le Pratyāhāra ou l'abstraction. L'esprit a une tendance naturelle à courir vers les objets extérieurs. Le yogi retire encore et encore l'esprit des objets des sens et le fixe sur le Soi. Un yogi doté du pouvoir de Pratyāhāra peut entrer en Samādhi même dans un lieu bondé en retirant ses sens en un clin d'œil. Il n'est pas perturbé par les sons tumultueux et les bruits de toute description. Même sur le champ de bataille, il peut se reposer en son centre, le Soi, en retirant ses sens. Celui qui pratique le Pratyāhāra est mort au monde. Il ne sera pas affecté par les vibrations extérieures. À tout moment, par simple volonté, il peut amener ses sens sous son parfait contrôle. Ils sont ses serviteurs ou instruments obéissants.
Withdrawal of the senses is Pratyahara or abstraction. The mind has a natural,tendency to run towards external objects. The Yogi again and again withdraws the mind from the objects of the senses and fixes it on the Self. A Yogi who is endowed with the power of Pratyahara can enter into Samadhi even in a crowded place by withdrawing his senses within the twinkling of an eye. He is not disturbed by tumultuous sounds and noises of any description. Even on the battlefield he can rest in his centre? the Self? by withdrawing his senses. He who practises Pratyahara is dead to the world. He will not be affected by the outside vibrations. At any time by mere willing he can bring his senses under his perfect control. They are his obedient servants or instruments.
