यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः | इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता
yadā saṃharate cāyaṃ kūrmo.aṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ . indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyastasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā
اور جب یہ شخص اپنی تمام 'اِندرِیوں' (حواس) کو حسی اشیاء سے مکمل طور پر اسی طرح سمیٹ لیتا ہے جیسے ایک کچھوا اپنے اعضاء کو سمیٹ لیتا ہے، تب اس کی 'پرگیہ' (عقل) قائم ہو جاتی ہے۔
And when this one fully withdraws the senses from the objects of the senses, as a tortoise wholly (withdraws) the limbs, then his wisdom remains established.
'اِندرِیوں' (حواس) کو سمیٹنا 'پرتیاہار' (Pratyahara) یا تجرید کہلاتا ہے۔ ذہن کی فطری عادت بیرونی اشیاء کی طرف بھاگنا ہے۔ 'یوگی' (Yogi) بار بار ذہن کو حسی اشیاء سے ہٹا کر 'آتمَن' پر مرکوز کرتا ہے۔ ایک 'یوگی' جو 'پرتیاہار' کی طاقت سے مالا مال ہو، وہ آنکھ جھپکتے ہی اپنی 'اِندرِیوں' کو سمیٹ کر بھیڑ بھاڑ والی جگہ میں بھی 'سمادھی' میں داخل ہو سکتا ہے۔ وہ کسی بھی قسم کے شور و غل سے پریشان نہیں ہوتا۔ میدانِ جنگ میں بھی وہ اپنی 'اِندرِیوں' کو سمیٹ کر اپنے مرکز، یعنی 'آتمَن' میں آرام کر سکتا ہے۔ جو 'پرتیاہار' کی مشق کرتا ہے وہ دنیا کے لیے مردہ ہو جاتا ہے۔ وہ بیرونی ارتعاشات سے متاثر نہیں ہوتا۔ کسی بھی وقت صرف اپنی مرضی سے وہ اپنی 'اِندرِیوں' کو مکمل کنٹرول میں لا سکتا ہے۔ وہ اس کے فرمانبردار خادم یا آلات ہوتے ہیں۔
Withdrawal of the senses is Pratyahara or abstraction. The mind has a natural,tendency to run towards external objects. The Yogi again and again withdraws the mind from the objects of the senses and fixes it on the Self. A Yogi who is endowed with the power of Pratyahara can enter into Samadhi even in a crowded place by withdrawing his senses within the twinkling of an eye. He is not disturbed by tumultuous sounds and noises of any description. Even on the battlefield he can rest in his centre? the Self? by withdrawing his senses. He who practises Pratyahara is dead to the world. He will not be affected by the outside vibrations. At any time by mere willing he can bring his senses under his perfect control. They are his obedient servants or instruments.
