श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् | स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः
śreyānsvadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharmātsvanuṣṭhitāt . svadharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ paradharmo bhayāvahaḥ
欠点があっても、自身のスヴァダルマ（義務）は、他者のスヴァダルマが完璧に遂行されたものよりも優れている。自身のスヴァダルマに従事して死ぬ方が良い。他者のスヴァダルマは恐れを伴う。
One's own duty [Customary or scripturally ordained observances of different castes and sects.-Tr.], though defective, is superior to another's duty well-performed. Death is better while engaged in one's own duty; another's duty is fraught with fear.
人が自身の義務を、たとえ功徳に乏しくとも果たして死ぬことは、他者の義務を完璧に遂行して生きるよりも、確かに良いことである。なぜなら、他者の義務には落とし穴があるからだ。クシャトリヤ（武士階級）の義務は、正義の戦いで戦うことである。アルジュナは戦わなければならない。これが彼の義務である。たとえ自身の義務を果たす中で死んだとしても、彼にとってはそれが良い。彼は天国へ行くだろう。彼は他者の義務を果たすべきではない。それは彼に危険をもたらすだろう。彼は戦いを止め、放棄の道に入るべきではない。（XVIII.47参照）
It is indeed better for man to die discharging his own duty though destitute of merit than for him to live doing the duty of another though performed in a perfect manner. For the duty of another has its pitfalls. The duty of a Kshatriya is to fight in a righteous battle. Arjuna must fight. This is his duty. Even if he dies in the discharge of his own duty? it is better for him. He will go to heaven. He should not do the duty of another man. This will bring him peril. He should not stop from fighting and enter the path of renunciation. (Cf.XVIII.47).
