न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचि- न्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः | अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे ||२०||
na jāyate mriyate vā kadāchin nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ ajo nityaḥ śhāśhvato 'yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śharīre
アートマンは決して生まれることもなく、決して死ぬこともない。一度存在して、再び存在しなくなることもない。アートマンは不生であり、永遠であり、常在であり、太古よりのものである。肉体が殺されても、アートマンは殺されない。
The soul is never born nor does it ever die; nor having once existed, does it cease to be. The soul is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. It is not slain when the body is slain.
これはギーターにおける最も力強い宣言の一つです。クリシュナはアートマンを「生まれない」「死なない」「消滅しない」「不生（ajaḥ）」「永遠（nityaḥ）」「太古より（purāṇaḥ）」と、六つの否定を用いて表現しています。最後の行は、肉体が破壊されてもアートマンは全く影響を受けないという、その簡潔さにおいて圧倒的です。
This is one of the most powerful declarations in the Gita. Krishna stacks six negations to describe the soul: not born, not dying, not ceasing, unborn (ajaḥ), eternal (nityaḥ), primeval (purāṇaḥ). The final line is devastating in its simplicity — even when the body is destroyed, the soul remains untouched.
