English

The Blessed Lord said They say that the peepul Tree, which has its roots upward and the branches downward, and of which the Vedas are the leaves, is imperishable. He who realizes it is knower of the Vedas.

解説 — 日本語

The description of the universe as a peepul 樹 is only metaphorical. This peepul is said to be eternal because it cannot be cut except by the axe of 知識.All persons depend upon the Lord for the fruits of their 行動s? because He alone knows the right relation between the 行動s and their fruits. He alone is the dispenser of the fruits of 行動s of human beings. 賢者たち persons also depend upon the Lord for the fruit of their 知識. The Lord alone removes the veil of タマス(無知) through His grace and mercy. The inclination for Advaita Vedantic Sadhana arises through the Lords grace. The desire for the realisation of the Oneness is produced in 心s of wise men by the grace of the Lord? which is the antidote to all fears. (Avadhuta Gita? I.1)Those who serve the Lord with unswerving or singleminded devotion go beyond the three alities of Nature through His grace. They attain 知識 of 自己 through the grace of the Lord and get release from the round of 生 and 死. Those who have a right understanding of the real nature of Brahman or the Supreme Being also get emancipation easily. The Lord teaches Arjuna in this discourse about the real nature of Brahman or 至高の自己 and the path that leads 魂 to union with Him. The Lord describes the nature of Samsara or worldly life as a peepul 樹 in order to create non執着 or disラジャス(激情)? because he who is endowed with true and lasting disラジャス(激情) alone is fit for attaining the 知識 of 自己. Samsara is compared to a 樹. because it can be cut off like a 樹.All the other 樹s have their roots below? but this peculiar? strange and most wonderful 樹 of Samsara (Maya) has its root above? in Brahman. This peepul 樹 is different from all other 樹s. Brahman is the resting place or support of everything. It is eternal. It is great. It is the most high. It is the Supreme Being. It is supreme over all things. It is the source of everything. Therefore it is said that It is the One above. This One above is the root of this 樹 of Samsara. Brahan Who is superior to all is Urdhva. That which has Brahman as its cause is Urdhvamulam. In the Puranas it is said The 樹 of the Unmanifest has sprung from Brahman. Buddhi is its trunk? the senseopenings are its hollows? the great elements its boughs? the senseobjects its leaves and branches? Dharma and Adhrama (virtue and vice) its beautiful flowers? 喜び and 痛み its fruits. Having cut asunder this 樹 with the powerful sword of the 知識 of 自己? and then having attained to the eternal bliss of Brahman? no one comes back from there again.Brahman is the root of this 樹. It is the upper part of this 樹 and so It is called Urdhva. In reality there are no distinctions such as upward? downward or middle in the One Which is the indivisible unity. The name Asvattha is usually derived from Asvattha which means not standing or enduring or remaining till tomorrow. A means not Sva means tomorrow Ttha means remaining. This is ite an appropriate word for this world樹 which is ever changing and passing away.In the Katha Upanishad also there is a mention about this Asvattha 樹 (II.6.1). The Gita is an essence of the Upanishads only.Samsara is generally understood by the common people as meaning remaining surrounded by ones wife and children and doing ones daily duties. This is a restricted or narrow meaning. Samsara means the whole worldprocess or the cosmic manifestation or the everchanging phenomenal world. Hiranyagarbha? the individual souls? the cosmic intelligence? egoism? the rootelements? etc.? represent the brancehs of this 樹 of Samsara. They extend downwards. They evolve into grosser and grosser states. Therefore it is said that the 樹 has its branches below. Egoism is the sprout which goes downwards in three directions? viz.? the three alities of Nature.Mind is the offshoot. Then come the five elements? viz.? earth? water? fire? air and ether? and the five organs of 知識. Then comes sound which stimulates the ears to hear sweet music. Then comes touch which stimulates the skin to enjoy soft things. Then comes form which stimultaes the eye to behold beautiful objects. Then comes taste which stimulates the tongue to enjoy palatable things. Then comes smell which stimulates the nose to enjoy fragrant and scented objects. From the roots of 行動s with expectation of fruits a new branch of rirth comes up. The mineral kingdom? the vegetable kingdom? the animal kingdom and the human kingdom are all branches of this 樹 of Samsara. Man does good and evil 行動s with the help of 身体 and takes 生s to experience the fruits thereof. The human body is the water for this 樹 of Samsara.身体 itself is the peepul 樹. The root is the cerrospinal nervous system (brain). The various nerves are the branches that ramify downwards to the various organs distributed over 身体.Avyaya Eternal? because this 樹 rests on an unbroken seires of 生s without beginning and end it is thus eternal. It can be cut down by the sword of 知識 of Brahman. Just as the leaves of a 樹 protect it? so also ヴェーダ protect this 樹 of Samsara? treating of virtue and vice? with their causes and fruits. He who knows this 樹 of Samsara and its roots as described above is a knower of ヴェーダ. He is a knower of the teachings of ヴェーダ. Not even an iota remains to be known beyond this 樹 of Samsara and its root. He who knows it is omniscient. The Lord has eulogised the 知識 of the 樹 of Samsara and its root in order to encourage aspirants to acire this 知識.

15.2The branches of that (樹), extending down-wards and upwards, are strengthened by the alities and have sense-objects as their shoots. And the roots, which are followed by 行動s, spread down-wards in the human world [According to A.G. and M.S. manusya-loke means a body distinguished by Brahminhood etc.].15.3Its form is not perceived here in that way; nor its end, nor beginning, nor continuance, After felling this Peepul whose roots are well developed, with the strong sword of 無執着-;15.4Thereafter, that State has to be sought for, going where they do not return again: I take refuge in that Primeval Person Himself, from whom has ensued the eternal Manifestation.15.5賢者たち ones who are free from pride and non-discrimination, who have conered the evil of association, [Hatred and love arising from association with foes and friends.] who are ever devoted to spirituality, completely free from desires, free from the dualities called 幸福 and sorrow, reach that undecaying State.15.6Neither the sun nor the moon nor fire illumines That. That is My supreme Abode, reaching which they do not return.15.7It is verily a part of Mine which, becoming the eternal individual soul in the region of living beings, draws (to itself) the organs which have 心 as their sixth, and which abide in Nature.15.8When the master leaves it and even when he assumes a body, he departs taking these, as wind (carries away) odours from their receptacles.15.9This one enjoys the objects by presiding over the ear, eyes, skin and tongue as also the nose and 心.15.10Persons who are diversely deluded do not see it even when it is leaving or residing (in this body), or experiencing, or in association with the alities. Those with the eye of 知識 see.15.11And the yogis who are diligent see this one as existing in themselves. The non-discriminating ones who lack self-control do not see this one-though (they be) diligent.
